Santa Ana winds will briefly gust through Orange County’s northeastern canyons and foothills late tonight and early Tuesday, blowing away the thick, patchy cloud cover that lingered much of the weekend, the National Weather Service says.

Forecasters say the winds will reach 45 mph in Fremont Canyon, above the Anaheim Hills, and 20-30 mph in such foothill cities as Orange and Anaheim. A fire weather advisory is not likely because the landscape is still drying out from November’s big rain storm.

Rains leave canyons unscathed so far

With more rain expected today, officials keep eyes on the skies.

THE CANYONS Heavy overnight and morning showers in the canyons of Southern Orange County left residents wet, but unscathed.

Residents reported no significant damage in Silverado Canyon, Modjeska Canyon or Trabuco Canyon.

Rows of sandbags lined Live Oak Canyon Road and puddles dotted the landscape.

In Modjeska Canyon this morning, road crews were removing at least 2 inches of mud in some areas of Modjeska Canyon Road. The mud had come down from a nearby hillside and onto the roadway.

Officials are keeping an eye on the skies, as more rain is forecasted for today.

Boys Town learns safety in Trabuco Canyon

Edwards Lifesciences employee volunteers teach resident all about fire, home and other safety issues.

Residents of Boys Town in Trabuco Canyon learned all about staying safe, courtesy of 85 volunteers from Edwards Lifesciences in Irvine.

The volunteers gave demonstrations on first aid, fire, house, and recreation safety during the four-hour event on Saturday that included a meal served by In-N-Out.

“The kids here have been so mistreated but you can tell they feel loved in this family environment here,” said John Withers, vice president of sales and marketing for Edwards Lifesciences.

Withers said that employees of the company have a charity a month they volunteer for, like Boys Town.

“A lot of people in our company expressed an interest in coming back here and reading to the kids,” Withers said.

Along with Edwards’ employees, a unit from the Orange County Fire Authority came by and passed out fire hats to all the kids, before it was called to duty to fight the Freeway Complex fire in Santa Ana Canyon.

Besides learning about safety, Israel Colmonares, another Edwards employee, asked members of the musical group he belongs to, Danny and the Daytrippers, to provide entertainment. Colmonares said his fellow members were glad to come and play.

“We figured it was the right thing to do,” said Colmonares.

The safety event was part of a nationwide effort by Edwards’ sales force to support Boys Town groups.

Coto’s proposed polo arena delayed

November 21st, 2008

Some residents raise concerns about the impact of the facility.

Plans for a proposed polo arena in Coto de Caza are being delayed after a public hearing held by the OC Planning Department.

The arena was proposed by the Silver Bronze Corporation, which owns the land where the proposed arena would be located. The site is adjacent to the Coto de Caza Equestrian Center.

Silver Bronze was approached three years ago by members of the Orange County Polo Club, which lost the arena where they used to play polo. That arena was located in the now-closed El Toro Marine base. The plans for the Great Park did not include any equestrian elements and the club was asked to leave.

Rose King, president of the Silver Bronze Corporation, said during the hearing that money earned from leasing the arena to the Polo Club would help pay for improvements to other Silver Bronze properties in the area.

During the hearing held Thursday afternoon in Santa Ana, Michael Wellborn, county zoning administrator, delayed making any decision on the project and asked that the OC Planning staff provide some additional information on several issues raised during the hearing.

Those included access by emergency vehicles, control of dust, plans for dealing with sensitive habitat, night lighting and the impact of a retaining wall.

There were 22 people at the hearing. Some of those speaking against the proposed arena live on Via Alondra in the Village area of Coto de Caza. Some houses there have a view of the proposed site; there is a grassy park and another road between those residents and the proposed arena.

Tim Kerwin lives on Via Alondra and spoke against the project.

“This project opens the floodgates to other projects that I feel don’t fit the uses the area was designed for,” Kerwin said.

Larry Christensen, a homeowner from the Estates section of Coto de Caza, said he represented the three residences right next to the site of the proposed arena and said all three homeowners supported the project.

“I believe it would enhance the area,” said Christensen. “According to the Coto de Caza specific plan, it is one of the uses designated for the area.”

The next review of the project is set for 2 p.m. on Dec. 18, in room B10 of the H. G. Osborne Building, 300 N. Flower St., Santa Ana.
